Even though I was born and raised in Ohio, I left at 18 and spent the next twenty years living elsewhere. But for 18 of those years, I still came home for Thanksgiving—and that’s when new traditions began. Now that I’m living here again, I try to experience Northeast Ohio the way I did during those visits: with fresh eyes and a sense of nostalgia. It’s the same feeling I had when my daughter saw snow for the first time—pure magic.
My mother-in-law now visits from Mexico, and getting to witness her excitement at the first snowfall reminds me just how special this place is during the holidays. So whether you’re coming home, hosting family, or meeting up with old friends back in town, here’s a curated list of winter favorites to help you show off Northeast Ohio in the best possible way.
Holiday Lights
One of Akron’s crown jewels—and my personal favorite holiday light experience. Stroll the gardens glowing with thousands of lights, then tour the historic Manor House, beautifully decorated with a different theme each year. Afterward, warm up in the courtyard with cider or hot cocoa, nibble on ginger snaps, gather by the fire, and—if the kids are with you—say hello to Santa.
Tip: Weekends get busy and sell out. Buy tickets online ahead of time and bundle up!
This immersive experience offers both a walk-through and drive-through option (I’ve only done the walk-through). With 1.5 million+ lights and large themed areas like Colorful Forest, Glittering Galaxy, Swan Lake, and Santa’s North Pole Lodge, it’s a true spectacle.
Note: It’s a lot of ground to cover—wear good walking shoes and dress warmly. Buying online is cheaper.
Enchanting winter installations transform the botanical gardens into a glowing, icy escape perfect for families or date night.
A festive display that’s easy to navigate, especially for younger kids. Colorful, fun, and a great pairing with a warm dinner nearby.

Outdoor Winter Activities
Winter is one of the most magical times to get outside in Northeast Ohio—crisp air, snowy trails, and seasonal activities you can only enjoy this time of year. Whether you're hosting family, entertaining kids, or reliving childhood nostalgia, these are great ways to make the most of the season.
A classic winter moment in the heart of downtown, complete with twinkling lights and a festive backdrop. Purchase tickets at the Skate Rental Kiosk on the Cleveland Foundation Centennial Plaza.
A local favorite and perfect pairing with a stop at the Akron Children’s Museum or a warm drink downtown.
Part of Cleveland Metroparks, this is the iconic winter thrill in Northeast Ohio. The twin 700-foot refrigerated toboggan chutes run even when there’s no snow, making it a reliable family tradition.
Tip: Riders must wear gloves, and weekends can get busy—go early or on weekday evenings.
One of the best snow tubing hills in the region with multiple chutes, conveyor belt tows, and fun for all ages. Just bundle up and enjoy the ride.
Note: Online Reservations are usually required, especially around holidays.
Yes, winter hikes are worth it—peaceful, quiet, and beautiful after a fresh snowfall. A few favorites:
Brandywine Falls (icy waterfalls = magical)
Blue Hen Falls (short hike, scenic payoff)
Ledges Trail (the overlook is stunning in winter)
Beaver Marsh (great for spotting wildlife even in colder weather)
Tip: Wear good boots; some trails get icy. .
Many trails in Cuyahoga Valley transform into perfect snowshoe and XC-ski routes when conditions are right. You can snowshoe almost anywhere in the park; for cross-country skiing, try:
Kendall Lake
Pine Grove Trail
Ski Trails at Howe Meadow (when groomed)
Some local outfitters offer rentals if you don’t have your own gear.
Winter Walks at Local Parks & Nature Centers
Northeast Ohio parks make winter feel downright cozy:
Sledding Hills (Bring Your Own Sled!)
For simple, nostalgic fun:
Indoor Activities
Winter is the one time of year I never feel guilty about spending more time indoors. Think: warm theaters, cozy museums, movies on cold afternoons, or nostalgic roller-skating and bowling.
World-class performances right in Cleveland—Broadway tours, concerts, plays, and dance.
Iconic, interactive, and a must for music lovers. Located in downtown Cleveland off Lake Erie's shore next to the Great Lakes Science Center and Browns Stadium. Give yourself time to dive into the world of legendary artists, groundbreaking music, and the cultural impact of rock and roll.
Hands-on exhibits and an OMNIMAX theater make this a hit with kids (and adults). It’s also right next door to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so you can easily do both in one visit.
A modern, architecturally striking museum with thought-provoking contemporary exhibits, events, and family workshops.
One of the best in the country, with an incredible collection spanning from ancient to contemporary—and free general admission.
Old-school arcade games, duckpin bowling, and go-karting.
A smaller museum right off Lock 3 in downtown Akron, perfect for younger kids with hands-on exhibits. In winter, pair it with ice skating at Lock 3 for a fun day out.
Pop-Up Holiday Markets & Bazaars
I’m a market girl through and through—and this time of year brings out the best pop-ups:
Small Town Holiday Charm
Want that Hallmark-movie feeling? Northeast Ohio does small towns really well.
Picturesque waterfalls, boutique shops, horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa sightings, and the famous Popcorn Ball Drop on New Year’s Eve. Don’t leave without visiting Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop or take a glassblowing class.
Quaint, walkable, full of independently owned shops, boba tea spots, frozen yogurt, and great restaurants.
A revitalized downtown with holiday events, restaurants, live music, local shops, and ice skating.
Don’t miss:
Grandpa Joe’s for nostalgic candy
Sense the Falls for candle-making + drinks
Leo’s Italian Social for dinner
The Watson Speakeasy for the perfect nightcap
Historic square, twinkling lights, and the iconic gazebo. Great dining, shopping, and activities including:
All Fired Up — paint-your-own pottery
Alien Vacation Mini Golf — quirky and fun indoors
Sports in Northeast Ohio
Catch the NFL in action on the lakefront at Browns Stadium. The atmosphere is unmatched—but so is the wind chill. Dress warm!
Cleveland Cavaliers & LeBron’s Legacy:
Catch an NBA game at Rocket Arena. Fans can also visit House Three Thirty in Akron, LeBron’s community hub where you can gather to eat, drink, have a treat, see a show and visit Lebron's Home Court, an immersive journey into his life through original artifacts.
A must-see for football fans, full of history, memorabilia, and interactive exhibits.

Restaurants
Old-school Akron steakhouse (my grandparents dined here—it’s a true institution).
Cozy and upscale.
An Akron original since 1934, Swenson’s just celebrated 90 years of serving its famous Galley Boy burger. Though they’ve started expanding into new cities, their carhop service and hometown feel make it a true Akron classic with the best burgers in town.
A local late-night legend (cash only).
Known for its “Midwest Nice” vibe, Cordelia was named Cleveland Magazine’s 2023 Best New Restaurant and featured on Tasting Table’s 22 Best New Restaurants in the U.S. The menu blends heritage-inspired recipes with a modern twist, led by James Beard Award finalist Chef Vinnie Cimino. Sakura [↗] & Noodle King [↗] (Akron/Fairlawn):
Our go-to spot for sushi and ramen. Sakura serves fresh sushi while its sister restaurant, Noodle King, specializes in ramen—you can order from either menu. It’s always a welcoming atmosphere, and my kids love the boba tea and Japanese sodas.
